Malaysia 2013 Lighthouses II

Throughout Peninsular Malayisa’s 2,068km of coastline, there are 11 lighthouses operating to provide guidance for navigation.  Marine Department of Malaysia is responsible to establish a safe, secure and systematic sea communication system, and marine conservation towards quality development of national maritime policy.  The Marine Department maintains and manages the lighthouses in conjunction with the Light Dues Board.

50sen • Pulau Rimau, Pulai Pinang
The Pulau Rimau lighthouse is located on a small island on the southeast corner of Penang Island, off the coast of Permatang Damar Laut.  The lighthouse helps ships navigate into the South Channel of Penang, marking the beginning of the route to Gerogetown.  Built by the British in 1885, the lighthouse consists of 17 meter steel tower with a  focal plane elevation of 39 meters.  Apart from the lighthouse itself, Pulau Rimau is uninhabited and accessible only by boat.  Pulau Rimau itself has been documented as far back as the 1590’s when Captain James Lancaster recorded it as Pulo Rimau in his log.

60sen • Fort Cornwallis, Pulau Pinang
Established in 1882, the Fort Cornwallis lighthouse station initially comprised of a tall mast with a signal beacon at the top.  The current square pyramidal tower was added next to the mast, and was completed in 1914.  The cast iron beams were pre-fabricated in England before they were shipped to Penang to be erected.  The white, 21-meter tower is topped with hexagonal gallery enclosing its lantern.  The lighthouse was built within the compound of the star-shaped Fort Conwarllis, which was built in 1810.

60sen • Pulau Angsa, Selangor
The Pulau Angsa lighthouse is located on a small island by the same name about 40km northwest off Port Klang.  Built in 1887, the white masonry tower is 11 meter tall, topped with a gallery that houses the lantern.  At the base of the tower is a building that houses the supporting equipment and living space.  About 400 meters away is a viewing tower used for moon sightings.

RM5 Miniature Sheet • One Fathom Ban, Selangor
The current One Fathom Bank lighthouse is actually the 4th lighthouse to be built in the vicinity of the sandbank.  Completed in 1998, the uniquely designed lighthouse is 43 meter tall, with a round cylindrical steel tower topped by a triple gallery.  The red and white pointed tower rises from the center of a dome-shaped base that houses accommodation and equipment storage.  The older lighthouse that it replaces still stands 500 meters away, and is being preserved due to its historical value.
