Malaysia : Postal History

Postal service in Malaysia dates back to early 1800s when Malaya was under British rule.  When the Straits Settlements were established in 1826, as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, there were already postal service operating with provisional Indian stamps.  The Post Office Act XVII of 1837 provided that the Governor-General of India in Council had the Exclusive right of conveying letters by post for hire within the territories of the East India Company.  Under the Inddian Post Office Act XVII of 1854, the post-offices at Penang and Singapore were merely branches of the Indian Post Office, reporting to  Post the Director-General of Posts in India.

In 1867, Straits Settlements became a British Crown Colony, permanent stamps were issued bearing “STRAITS SETTLEMENTS POSTAGE”
