Indonesia 2022 Yogyakarta Kraton Guards
![]() |
The Yogyakarta Kraton guards, known as Prajurit Keraton, are traditional royal soldiers who serve as ceremonial protectors of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
Their origins date back to the founding of the Yogyakarta Kraton in 1755, when they functioned as real military forces responsible for defending the palace and the Sultan. Over time, their role shifted from military defense to ceremonial and cultural duties.
Today, the guards regularly appear during royal ceremonies, palace events, and traditional parades, wearing distinctive uniforms, batik cloths, and traditional weapons such as spears, swords, or rifles, each unit having its own name, colors, and symbols.
The Kraton guards are significant because they preserve Javanese military traditions, reflect the authority and dignity of the Sultanate, and serve as a living symbol of Yogyakarta’s history, culture, and royal heritage.
