Block of Stamps

In philately, a block is a group of four or more un-separated stamps. Blocks are of interest not only because they are rarer than individual stamps, but they also preserve relative positions of stamps as they were originally printed, information that is crucial to understanding how the stamps were produced.

Format

Block of Four

A standard block consisting of four unseparated stamps arranged in a 2x2 format. These are popular among collectors for their symmetry and completeness.

 Plate Block

A block of stamps (usually 4 or more) that includes the margin (selvage) with the plate number used during printing. Plate blocks are highly valued for the additional information they provide about the stamp's production.

Corner Block

This block is taken from the corner of a stamp sheet, often including the sheet margins and sometimes plate numbers or other markings. Corner blocks can be more desirable due to these additional features.

Imprint Block

An imprint block includes the printer's imprint in the margin, providing insight into the stamp's origin ( eg. Name of printer ). These are often collected for their historical significance.

Traffic Light Block

This block features the color registration marks (often colored dots or squares) used during the printing process to ensure color accuracy. These marks are typically found in the sheet margins.

Gutter Block

A gutter block consists of stamps on either side of a gutter (the blank space between panes on a sheet). These blocks are prized for their uniqueness and the presence of the gutter.

Specimen Block

Specimen blocks are stamps overprinted with the word "SPECIMEN" to indicate they were distributed for reference purposes and not for postal use. These are often collected for their rarity and historical value.

Malaysia 2014 Museums & Artifacts - Unveiling of the Hidden Treasures

The previous Museum & Artifacts issued  in 2013 had the artifacts at the right portions painted in termo-sensitive black ink, of which will only reveal the artifacts upon exposure to high temperature.
Termo-sensitive ink is very useful in making  flat thermometers, battery testers, clothing, baby bottles and mugs.  But the purpose on the ink in stamp is very puzzling.

The method somehow had the stamps look awful, with a black strip on the right portions.   Although Malaysia’s weather is hot, but not to the extend of effecting the termo-sensitive ink.  The stamps will hardly ‘reveal its artifacts’ even after prolonged exposure under sunlight.  The only way to ‘reveal its artifacts’ is by soaking in hot water or over a hot pan, which is very unlikely for a stamp collector to admire their collections.

It is timely for POS Malaysia to reissue the Museum & Artifacts without the termo-sensitive ink.  Aside from the absence of  termo-sensitive ink, the design and specifications of the stamps are exactly the same.  Yet, the first day cover, the folder and the stamp sheets’ background are differently designed.

Thus, this issue is adequately named Museum & Artifacts – Unveiling of the Hidden Treasures.

Malaysia 2014 Visit Malaysia Year

Visit Malaysia Year 2014 stamps were scheduled to be released during the 2013 OMG Stamp Week at Berjaya Times Square.

However, a Filipino wildlife photographer Romy Ocon recognized the bird photo in the Pos Malaysia’s promotional posters on the latter’s Facebook page.  The posters were later taken off the fb page without further explanation.

Romy is not the only photographer accusing of plagiarism by Pos Malaysia.  Singapore based American Con Foley , and UK based Roberto De Micheli too claimed their photographs were being reproduced in the coming VMY stamps.  Malaysian Nature Society ( MNS ) also pointed out that there could be more images being used without permission.

The stamp’s design were submitted by Media Eye Sdn Bhd, a design house owned by World Communications Network Resources (M) Sdn Bhd to Tourism Malaysia and Pos Malaysia.
