Malaysia 2015 Farm Animals

Malaysian village landscape is filled with colourful flora and diverse fauna.  It often consists of a wide variety of domestic animals adding a whole dimension to rural life with both large animals like the water buffalo and the small ones like the chicken in the fields.

A cornerstone of Malaysian life, the village showcases the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.  Typically villagers will keep and breed chicken, water buffalo as well as geese and goats.  They are amongst the most frequently found domestic animals in villages.  These animals serve various purposes including as beasts of burden as well as a source of nourishment.

60sen Angsa ( Anse cygnoides )
A goose is a medium to large intelligent bird, with a good memory for people, animals and situations making it naturally suitable to guard the village against intruders.  It is also kept as a poultry for its eggs, meat and down feathers.  It tends to get along with other domesticated animals including chickens.  It honks loudly and can stretch its long neck out to great length when threatened.  It also tends to look out for each other when one is injured or sick.  The young are protected by its parents thereby increasing its survival chances into adulthood.  Its diet is purely vegetation.

80sen Kerbau ( Bubalus bubalis )
Water buffalo cuts a bold profile with its curled horns and bulky size.  It enjoys streams and rivers as the water helps to keep it cool from the tropical heat.   Eventually used for meat, water buffalo is also commonly bred for its bountiful milk quantity.  In parts of Sabah, the water buffalo are trained for buffalo racing.

RM1.20 Ayam ( Gallus domesticus )
There are many breeds of domestic chicken although most have been crossbred with the wild chicken from the jungle.  Practically found in most villages, chicken is known as the most hardy and easy to breed farm animal.  Chicken eggs and meat can be a convenient and nutritious source of protein that can be cooked in various types of Malaysian cuisines.
