Matteo Ricci SJ (6 October 1552 – 11 May 1610) was an Italian Jesuit priest and one of the founding figures of the Jesuit China missions.

Ricci arrived at the Portuguese settlement of Macau in 1582 where he began his missionary work in China.

He mastered the Chinese language and writing system. He became the first European to enter the Forbidden City of Beijing in 1601 when invited by the Wanli Emperor, who sought his services in matters such as court astronomy and calendrical science. He emphasized parallels between Catholicism and Confucianism but opposed Buddhism. He converted several prominent Chinese officials to Catholicism.

Ricci created the Kunyu Wanguo Quantu, a 1602 map of the world written in Chinese characters.

Ricci also worked with several Chinese elites, such as Xu Guangqi, in translating Euclid's Elements into Chinese as well as the Confucian classics into Latin for the first time in history.

UN 2021 Mother Teresa

On 12 August 2021, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) issued a $1.80 definitive stamp to honour Mother Teresa.

The quote on the stamp reads “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Mother Teresa, the renowned nun and missionary, was born in North Macedonia in 1910. Her family was of Albanian descent.

At age 12, she strongly felt the calling to become a missionary. At the age of 18, she went to India, where she devoted herself to helping the destitute.

In 1948, she became an Indian citizen and founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in Kolkota (Calcutta) two years later, which became noted for its work among the poor and the ill in that city.
For over 45 years, she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity’s expansion, first in India and then in other countries, including hospices and homes for those without.

Mother Teresa’s work has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world. She received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace”.

Mother Teresa died on 5 September 1997, at the age of 87. The United Nations designates 5 September annually as the International Day of Charity.

The stamps were illustrated by Martin Mörck (Norway).

Albania-Italy Joint Issue 1998 Madre Teresa

Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu MC (born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, 26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997), better known as Mother Teresa, was an Albanian-Indian Catholic nun and the founder of the Missionaries of Charity.

Born in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire, at the age of 18 she moved to Ireland and later to India, where she lived most of her life. On 4 September 2016, she was canonised by the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. The anniversary of her death, 5 September, is her feast day.

Mother Teresa founded Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation, which grew to have over 4,500 nuns across 133 countries as of 2012. The congregation manages homes for people who are dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. The congregation also runs soup kitchens, dispensaries, mobile clinics, children's and family counselling programmes, as well as orphanages and schools. Members take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience and also profess a fourth vow: to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor."

Mother Teresa received several honours, including the 1962 Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize and the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. A controversial figure during her life and after her death, Mother Teresa was admired by many for her charitable work, but was criticised for her views on abortion and contraception, as well as the poor conditions in her houses for the dying. Her authorised biography, written by Navin Chawla, was published in 1992, and she has been the subject of many other works. On 6 September 2017, Mother Teresa and Saint Francis Xavier were named co-patrons of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta.
