Indonesia 2008-2010 Provincial Flora & Fauna

kepel & perkutut of Yogyakarta

The kepel fruit tree (Stelechocarpus burahol) is one of the best floral symbols of Yogyakarta. It has strong ties to the Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton) and was traditionally planted in royal gardens. Kepel represents purity, self-control, and nobility, values closely associated with Javanese court culture. Because it was once reserved for royalty, it symbolizes Yogja’s historical identity as a center of kingship and tradition.

The perkutut (dove) ( Geopelia striata ) is widely considered the best animal representative of Yogyakarta. In Javanese culture, the perkutut symbolizes peace, loyalty, harmony, and spiritual calm, qualities that align with Yogja’s philosophy of balance and refinement. It is also associated with leadership wisdom and inner peace, which fits Yogyakarta’s role as a cultural and philosophical heart of Java.
