Federation
of Malaya ( Persekutuan Tanah Melayu ) was a
federation of 11 states, of which 9 were Malay states and 2 was British Straits
Settlements.
In 1946,
the 11 states formed a single British Crown Colony known as the Malayan Union. Yet, due to the opposition from the Malay
nationalists, the Malayan Union was disbanded in 1948, and replaced by the
Federation of Malaya.
The Federation
of Malaya gained independence within the Commonwealth of
Nations on 31st August 1957.
In 1963,
Federation of Malaya federated with Singapore ,
Sarawak and North Borneo to form Malaysia
