Penny Black was the world’s first adhesive postage
stamp issue in Britain on 6th May 1840. Sir Rowland Hill has been credited with
originating the modern postal service, including the invention of the adhesive
postage stamp.
Penny Black stamp features the profile of Queen
Victoria, which was based on the engraved portrait medallion of the young
queen. The word “POSTAGE” appeared at
the top of the stamp and “ONE PENNY” at the bottom, indicating the amount that
had been prepaid for the transmission of the letter to which it was
affixed. The stamp was printed in black
ink, approximate 19 x 22 mm.
Two-Pence Blue was issued 2 days after the Penny
Black.
The first postmark cancellation used on Penny
Black and Two-Pence Blue was in the shape of a Maltese Cross, applied in red
ink.
